The Precision Raceworks BMW N55 HIGH PERFORMANCE IGNITION KIT is designed to integrate with any vehicle equipped with the N55 engine. This is the highest output ignition system ever developed for the N55 community Featuring 100% plug and play connections and low resistance 50ohm/ft proprietary plug wires. This High voltage & High Current coil design is equipped with technology from Marine & Aerospace applications.

While coils do not increase horsepower unless the coil they are replacing are not doing their job the factory coils are lacking in proper output so much that all cars tested (stock or heavily modified) gain 20+ whp and 20+ wtq! Before and after dyno testing can be seen here.

Software tuning of vehicle is NOT required, without software tuning the coil output is xxxMj with software tuning available from most major software and tuning companies the coil output can be increased to 118mJ. To put this in perspective the factory coils have an output of only XXmJ so this kit increases output XXX%!

All components used meet or exceed OEM requirements and feature seals which are both dust and water resistant.

So buy the most robust and highest output coil and stop replacing coils constantly, stop fighting misfires, & enjoy better throttle response, smoother idle, and even more power out of your N55 today!

*Aftermarket intake highly recommended and may be required on some applications. Not compatible with OEM airbox (or any airbox that sits on the manifold in the same location as the coils) and may require removal of a mounting peg on the manifold.

**F10 and e9x N55 Chassis cannot fit both ignition kit and aftermarket manifold due to inlet location across the back of the engine. Please email or call us for additional information before purchasing.

Precision Raceworks BMW N55 Ignition Kit (M2, 135i, M135i, M235i, 335i & 435i) ML Performance UK

Because of the constraint of space to put components in a pencil coil reliable and proven ACDelco ignition coils(PN D585 / LS Truck Coils) paired with short plug wires are used in high horsepower applications everywhere. So why didn’t we just make a kit using these coils since they are the “standard” in many high horsepower applications?

    • Your car is specifically designed to run “Dumb Coils” and the ACDelco coils are “Smart Coils”

This leaves four options for adapting the car to work with them

  1. Remove the factory DME and replace with Standalone system

      - Very costly & you lose some factory functions

  1. Remove the factory DME and change circuitry of the board to control “Smart Coils” instead of “Dumb Coils”

- Not a plug and play solution you can do at home, requires sending off your factory DME for custom work

  1. Add additional electronics to convert the IGBT output from the factory DME  back to 5V square wave to drive the “Smart Coils”

The factory system only has 1 IGBT system that can fail this solution has two IGBT systems that can fail, plus an additional converter box that can fail as well.  This results in 3 possible failure points.  In addition the DME no longer can “see” the coils which could cause other potential problems with how the computer is designed to monitor and react.

  1. Use the IGBT negative output and constant power with resistor to drive the IGBT inside the "smart coil" backwards

As above the factory system only has 1 IGBT system that can fail this solution has two IGBT systems that can fail, plus a resistor which heats up and can fail as well. This results     in 3 possible failure points.  In addition the DME no longer can “see” the coils which could cause other potential problems with how the computer is designed to monitor and react.

-  Flashing of the DME to suppress errors caused by using "Smart Coils" in place of "Dumb Coils" is required

During testing of this approach it was found that the ignition coil produced about 1/2 of its original capability

Testing also showed an increased stress on the IGBT in the coils increasing the failure rate and overall longevity of the coil

    • The ideal dwell time (calculated based on Duty cycle, RPM, and Duration) plays a big role in selecting the right ignition coil in any application

The maximum dwell time of 3.5ms is a fixed value for the N55 engine (allowing headroom for built motors turning more RPM)

  1. The ACDelco coil has an ideal dwell time of close to 4.5ms

Since the ACDelco coil would only be allowed a maximum charge time of 3.5ms the output is greatly reduced to 90mj while the Precision Raceworks coil is capable of 118mj

So not only as explained above using a “SmartCoil” isn’t a great idea on the N55 as it is not designed for it you also need to consider the ideal dwell time allowed  by the car and the design of the coil when making the proper selection.  We have also included the quick reference chart below to better understand performance of the LS coil, OEM coil, PR coil, and for fun Lamborghini coil.  Showing that there is no standard each coil is designed to work within specific calculated dwell periods so the correct coil must be selected or designed for each application.

Why choose Precision Raceworks?

By designing our own coil we were able to take into account the available dwell time of the N55 as well as the IGBT system being built into the DME.  We were even able to take into consideration the ohm load of the factory BMW coil that came in the N55.  What this means is our coil looks exactly like the factory coil to the DMEmaintaining all functions allowing the computer to monitor and react as designed by the engineers at BMW.

All of our kits come with:
    • Appropriate bracket
    • Hardware (nuts and bolts)
    • Coils
    • Spark plug wires
    • Coil power harnesses

Note for N55 Cars running PR coils:

You need to take the O2 sensor wires and route them behind the cylinder head. They don’t need to be extended or anything just un-clip them from the bracket. If they are left in the stock location, they could end up close to the spark plug wires and the high voltage running through them would make the O2 sensors signal mess up.

    Note: This also fits the

640i if vehicle has an aftermarket intake

    Can also be fitted on N54 vehicles as a relocation kit, such as E82/E88 135i, E82 1M, E90/E91/E92/E93 335i and E89 Z4*

*When fitting it on an E89 Z4 (N54) as a relocation kit, the Coil pack (#6)and support bracket cannot be fitted on the Z4 without further modifications to the car. The turbo air inlet pipes are solid (as standard) and will not allow pack #6 to be fitted or the bracket, you will need to change the turbo air inlet pipes to silicone to allow room for the brackets and pack #6 to be installed

To ensure the part(s) you have ordered fits your vehicle, we run a compatibility check prior to dispatch. We can do this either using your registration number(UK) or the last 7 digits of your VIN. Simply enter your car details prior to checkout.

Some trimming of the plastic covers and the plastic mount on the intake manifold may be required for fitment depending on the car.
